About

Hue Duong

I see the world through a lens of wonder. Both as a scientist captivated by the magic of how things work and as an artist drawn to the stories that connect us. A first-generation Chinese American, born and raised in Providence, RI, I have spent my life unraveling the delicate threads between life, memory, and meaning.

Having grown up without many family photos, due to my parents’ survival of the Cambodian genocide, I understand that images are more than just snapshots.  They are proof that we were here, that we loved, that we mattered.

That understanding deepened after I lost my mother to cancer and watched my father battle illnesses for most of his life. It taught me that nothing is permanent, except for the moments we choose to hold onto. Art became my way of bottling time, preserving what could so easily slip away.

A life before me: Family in refugee camp in Thailand

Before I ever picked up a camera, I was in front of the lens. I modeled for animation and cosplay designs. Stepping into different characters and bringing creative visions to life sparked my fascination with storytelling through imagery. Over time, I found myself drawn to the other side of the camera, wanting to capture the same magic I once embodied.

I serve on the board of GRID Gallery and the Rhode Island Black Business Association (RIBBA). Driven by a passion for amplifying underrepresented voices and creating opportunities for marginalized communities. At GRID Gallery, I help build visibility, foster community engagement, and create spaces where Queer BIPOC artists can thrive. As a board member of RIBBA, I focus on empowering small businesses and entrepreneurs from underrepresented backgrounds, leveraging my expertise in marketing and community outreach to drive meaningful impact. Whether through art, advocacy, or storytelling, I am committed to making art and opportunity more accessible to those who have been historically overlooked.
